How to Measure for Brass Gallery Rails

Measure the usable shelf width, confirm what the listed rail length includes, and check that each post base fits fully on the shelf. Overall rail length, rod length and the distance between fixing centers are different measurements. Use the exact product specification before ordering.

What is a gallery rail?

A gallery rail is a low rail along the edge of a shelf, used as a decorative retaining detail for displays. It is separate from the brackets that carry the shelf. It is not a handrail, fall-protection barrier or structural shelf support.

Measurements to send

  1. Shelf width: measure the usable span, allowing for side walls, trim and nearby cabinet doors.
  2. Shelf depth: record the front-to-back dimension and any rounded or beveled edge.
  3. Shelf thickness and material: identify timber, engineered board, stone, glass or another surface so fixing suitability can be reviewed.
  4. Rail layout: specify a front rail only or a three-sided arrangement. For three sides, record both width and return depth.
  5. Rail height and post bases: confirm clearance below the shelf above, the base footprint and access for installation.
  6. Finish and quantity: include the product link, finish and the number of shelves to equip.

Example: choosing a rail for a 36-inch shelf

If the shelf is 36 inches wide and you want a 1-inch margin at each end, the target overall rail length is 34 inches. This is a layout example, not a universal fitting rule. Decorative ends, base diameters and surrounding cabinetry can require different margins. Check that the selected product defines its size as the complete overall length.

How many posts do I need?

Post quantity and spacing depend on the specific rail design and selected length. Confirm the supplied arrangement with Kinycraft before ordering rather than applying a generic spacing rule to every model. For a long rail, send a marked shelf drawing showing any obstacles or restricted fixing locations.

Installation planning

Dry-position the actual assembled rail before marking holes. Keep each base fully supported, check edge clearance and choose pilot holes and fixings appropriate to the shelf material. Stone and glass need specialist assessment; a wood-shelf drilling method should not be assumed suitable. Check screw length against shelf thickness so screws do not emerge underneath.

A gallery rail does not increase the shelf's load capacity. The shelf, its brackets and its wall attachments must be suitable for the intended display independently of the rail.

Is the shelf included?

Check the exact listing and selected configuration. Standard rail-only listings describe the rail and posts; shelves and brackets shown as styling may be excluded. A builder configuration with added shelves or brackets can have different contents.
