Custom Brass Bistro Shelving, Built Around Your Space

This builder makes custom brass bistro shelving — the open brass-and-glass shelving you see over the counters of Parisian bistros, butler's pantries and home bars. Every frame is handmade from solid brass: round posts, turned connectors, support rails and round mounting flanges, built to the width, height and depth you enter.

The signature design is our classic ball connector shelving, with turned spherical joints at every junction. Simpler turned-finial and plain-connector frames are also available. Standard sizes use the same prices as our ready-made brass shelving listings; every other size is priced live as you build.

Handmade Brass Craftsmanship

Solid brass throughout

Posts, connectors, rails and flanges are solid brass — not plated steel or hollow look-alikes.

Handmade to order

Each frame is cut, turned, fitted and finished by skilled artisans after you order.

Ball connectors

Each spherical connector is turned and collared so the rails meet the posts like real bistro fittings — because they are.

Living finishes

Unlacquered brass ages into a natural patina; antique brass arrives pre-aged with warm highlights.

The Classic Ball-Connector Design

Modelled on traditional French bistro shelving and on our own ball-joint shelving range, the ball-connector frame is the most prominent model in the builder — and the one in the photographs that inspired it.

Spherical joints

An oversized turned brass sphere joins the posts and rails at every junction, with collared sockets where each tube enters.

Round brass posts

1″ round solid brass posts in a front and back row, one pair per bay.

Support rails

Front, back and cross rails at every level carry the shelf panels — glass, wood or hammered brass.

Round mounting flanges

Domed circular flanges fix the posts to the counter, floor or ceiling; round wall plates anchor wall-fixed frames.

Shelf Materials Compared

Choose frame only, or have made-to-size shelf panels included. The number of panels and the surcharge are always shown in the builder.

Hammered brass — recommended

A solid wooden core wrapped in hand-hammered solid brass sheet on the top, front and ends. Matches the frame finish for an all-brass look; every dimple is struck by hand.

Glass

Clear panels with polished edges let light through — the classic brass and glass shelving look for bars and butler's pantries. Glass specification is confirmed per order.

Wood

Solid wooden panels with an oiled finish bring warmth to kitchen shelving; the species is confirmed at the detail check.

Frame only

Every support rail and fixing stays in place, sized for stone, marble or timber panels you source yourself.

Mounting Options

Each mounting changes the flanges, stays and supports in the 3D preview — and the price.

Counter to ceiling

Posts run from brass flanges on the countertop to flanges at the ceiling — the classic back-bar arrangement.

Floor to ceiling

A full-height brass grid between floor and ceiling flanges, for larders and shop fittings.

Counter supported, wall fixed

Posts stand on the counter; short stays with round wall plates steady the frame — as in the classic bistro photograph.

Wall mounted

The whole frame hangs from round wall plates and support arms, clear of the counter.

Ceiling suspended

Hung entirely from the ceiling, open on every side — ideal over an island.

Freestanding étagère

A floor-standing brass étagère on round flanges, with an optional wall restraint.

How to Measure for Bistro Shelving

  • Overall width — the outside size across the posts. Posts never sit more than 36″ apart; the builder adds bays automatically.
  • Height — for counter-to-ceiling and floor-to-ceiling frames, measure the exact finished distance where the unit will stand; for wall and counter frames it is the overall frame height.
  • Depth — from the wall to the front of the frame.
  • Shelf spacing — shelves are evenly spaced by default; custom spacing is available in the builder.

What's Included

This list follows the design you build above and updates as you change it.

Not included: shelf panels when "frame only" is chosen, wall or ceiling anchors, and installation.

Installation Overview

Bistro shelving installs like the classic originals: the frame arrives in cleanly divided brass sections that bolt together on site.

  1. Set out

Mark the post positions on the counter, floor or ceiling using the dimensions from your order summary.

  2. Fix the flanges

Screw the round flanges to the counter, floor, ceiling or wall — always into studs, joists or solid masonry, with anchors suited to your structure.

  3. Assemble the frame

Posts, connectors and rails assemble in order; each joint is collared and secured.

  4. Fit the panels

Shelf panels drop onto the support rails and are secured with their hidden fittings.

Frequently asked questions

What is brass bistro shelving?

The open brass shelving used over bistro counters and in butler's pantries: round brass posts joined by turned connectors, carrying glass, wood or brass shelves. Our classic ball-connector model follows that traditional construction, with spherical joints at every junction.

Are the shelf panels included?

Only if you choose them. The builder asks whether you want shelf panels included: choose Frame + Shelf Panels for made-to-size hammered brass, glass or wooden panels, or Frame Only to fit panels you source yourself — the frame keeps every support rail either way.

Which shelf material should I choose?

We recommend hammered brass shelves — a wooden core wrapped in hand-hammered solid brass that matches the frame finish. Choose glass for the classic see-through bar look, or wood for a warmer kitchen feel. You can switch materials in the builder and see the price difference instantly.

How is the price calculated?

Standard sizes charge exactly the same prices as our ready-made brass bistro shelving listings. Custom sizes are priced from the nearest standard size using the same catalog structure — dimensions, levels, bays, finish and shelf material. The price you see is the price charged at checkout, before shipping and taxes.

Why does the ball-connector model cost more?

Every spherical connector is individually turned, drilled and collared — a ball-joint frame contains dozens of hand-finished fittings that plain frames don't need. That follows our catalog pricing, where ball-joint shelving sits above the equivalent plain-connector designs.

Which mountings are available?

Counter to ceiling, floor to ceiling, counter supported with wall fixing, wall mounted, ceiling and wall mounted, ceiling suspended, and a freestanding étagère — the builder shows the arrangements available for each connector design and explains what each one attaches to.

How many posts and bays will my shelving have?

Posts come in front-and-back pairs: one pair per bay boundary. Posts never sit more than 36″ apart, so wider frames gain bays automatically — the builder shows the exact post count and bay span as you type.

Can I set the shelf spacing?

Shelves are evenly spaced by default. Choose custom spacing in the builder to set the distance between shelves; custom spacing is made to order and priced as a custom configuration.

Can I order in centimetres?

Yes — switch the builder between inches and centimetres at any time. Values convert exactly, and the price never changes with the unit.

How do I care for the finish?

Unlacquered brass is a living finish that darkens over time; wipe it with a soft cloth and use brass polish if you prefer it bright. Antique brass should only be dusted, as polish removes the aged tone. Hammered brass shelves take the same care as the frame; oil wooden shelves occasionally.

Is installation included?

No — the frame arrives in cleanly divided sections with fixing screws, ready for your installer. Wall, ceiling and floor anchors depend on your structure and are not included. We review your sizes and mounting before production and contact you if anything needs clarifying.

Can I order several units for one project?

Yes. Configure each run and add it to the cart — each design stays a separate line with its own dimensions, levels and finish. Use the quantity selector for repeated identical units.
