Brass Pot Rails: How to Organize Your Kitchen with a Wall-Mounted Pot Rack

By the Kinycraft workshop team, makers of handcrafted brass and copper fixtures in Marrakech. Updated October 2026.

Quick answer

A brass pot rail is a wall-mounted bar with S-hooks for pots, pans and utensils. Mount it about 18-24 in above the countertop (often just above the backsplash), fixed into studs or solid masonry. Choose a length that leaves 2-3 in of clearance around each pan. Solid unlacquered brass rails are strong enough for cast iron and develop a warm patina next to copper cookware.

Key takeaways

  • Mount 18-24" above the counter, into studs or masonry.
  • Plan about one hook per 4-6" of rail.
  • Solid brass rails carry heavy pans and patina beautifully.

Why a brass pot rail?

Cupboard space disappears fast. A wall-mounted pot rack frees up drawers, keeps your most-used pans within reach and turns good cookware into decoration. Brass is the traditional choice in European kitchens: strong, corrosion-resistant and beautiful next to copper pans.

How high to mount a pot rail

Mount the rail roughly 18 to 24 inches above the worktop. That is high enough to clear the backsplash and small appliances, and low enough to reach without stretching. Above a range, keep a safe distance from the heat and follow your hood manufacturer's clearance guidance. Always fix into wall studs or solid masonry. Cast iron is heavy.

How long should it be?

Rail length Typical hooks Good for
24" (60 cm) 4-5 Utensils, small pans, mugs
36" (90 cm) 6-8 Everyday pans and utensils
48"+ (120 cm+) 8-12 A full cookware wall

Allow 2 to 3 inches between hanging pans so they do not knock together. Our rails are handmade, and custom lengths are available on request.

Hooks, loads and what to hang

  • Pots and pans: hang by the handle loop, heaviest pieces near the brackets.
  • Utensils: ladles, spatulas, whisks and measuring cups.
  • Mugs and herbs: perfect for a coffee station.
  • Tea towels: hang over the rail itself.

Styling a kitchen with brass rails

Repeat the brass: pair a pot rail with a brass gallery rail on open shelving above, and an unlacquered brass bridge faucet at the sink. Unlacquered pieces patina together, so the kitchen looks collected over time. Read our gallery rails for shelves guide for sizing.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a pot rail be mounted?

About 18 to 24 inches above the countertop, which clears the backsplash and keeps pans within easy reach.

Can a brass pot rail hold cast iron pans?

Yes, a solid brass rail fixed into studs or masonry can hold cast iron. Hang the heaviest pans near the brackets.

How many hooks do I need on a pot rail?

Plan roughly one hook for every 4 to 6 inches of rail, depending on the size of your pans.

Will an unlacquered brass pot rail tarnish in the kitchen?

It will develop a natural patina, faster near steam and cooking. You can keep the patina or polish it back with a lemon and baking soda paste.
